Who We Are
What
Special Needs Animal Sanctuary is a residential sanctuary that opened it's doors in
2003 and was created to provide lifetime care for less than perfect animals.

Handicapped   *  Senior Animals  *  Terminally Ill
                                                Chronically Ill  *  Mentally Challenged

The animals that come to our sanctuary are not available for adoption.  We are
limited to the number of animals we can accommodate seeing as how many of them
require significant care.
Care
WHY
I have done animal rescue for the past 24 years and about six years ago I noticed a
horrible pattern of some very special animals that were being left behind to die
simply because they no longer fit the quest of a "Perfect Pet."   Let's face it, we are
none perfect.
So many of these sad souls with blind eyes, crooked legs, out of rhythm heart and
elderly sat hopeless.  Who bothers to stop when younger -playful pups are around.
Just because they are different, doesn't mean they can't still feel love or give love in
their own special way.  All animals deserve to be treated with respect no matter how
different.
We as humans have so many choices for our sick, handicapped and elderly, sadly
so many incredible animals are simply killed because there aren't enough places
like ours.
We operate 365 days a year and we DO NOT pay ourselves.  We rely on sales from
this site and donations from wonderful people like YOU!
Our sanctuary also believes that love knows no boundaries.  If an animal needs help
no matter where it may be or in what country, if we have the room, we will bring it
here.   My heart truly wishes that we never had to turn down any animal that needs
us, but we only have a space when one of our fur angels has gone on to Rainbow
Bridge.
Our sanctuary is operated from our home in the foothills of the
Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
Our dogs love to sleep on Kuranda beds.  You can
donate one to us by clicking on this happy dog.  Go
to the state listings and choose North Carolina.

Animal Sanctuary.  It's so simple and deeply
appreciated.

is  Special Needs Animal Sanctuary, Inc.
Most of our animals are free to roam about the house.  We have a large fenced in
exercise area where they have supervised play times.   We pair them up in play
groups according to their disabilities.
Each meal is prepared for the individual animal and their needs. We have blended
diets, natural diets, cooked meals, and heart diets.
We have found it easy to keep a routine schedule so the animals do not get
confused.

Our kitties are housed in the Kitty Condo.  They have their very own 12x16 building
complete with couch and chair.  Attached to it is a 10x20 run with concrete floor and
roof.   You will find these guys playing on many of the trees and climbing tubes.  A
favorite spot for Valentine is sitting in the Barbie Jeep.  All of our kitties are feline
leukemia positive.

A few of the guys that are still  healthy enough, enjoy a casual walk down to the river
and back. For our elderly guys that can't walk long distances, a relaxing nightly ride
on the golf cart works out.   Once loaded up, it is their job to take food up the hill for
the feral cats, opossums, Bobcats, and whatever else decides to eat at the feeding
station.

Our guys also love to swing on the porch swing. Yep!  You heard me. They will
actually sit on top of each other trying to get on it.   We rock each one for ten minutes
and then it's on to another one. We do our boy Ridge last because he falls asleep
after five minutes of rocking.  They are such spoiled fur kids.   We have four
televisions  throughout the house  which we keep on the cartoon network .  After
meals we put on easy listening music so they can relax while their food digests.

We believe in feeding three times a day so their tummies never get
hungry.
My husband and I have dedicated our life to saving these wonderful creatures.
